The past three months have radically changed how I see and treat myself as a woman. Three months ago I decided to transition off of an all-to-common women's prescription, which I had been taking for about six years, the birth control pill (insert the first phrase of Beethoven's 5th here). This was after about 3 or 4 months of looking into holistic ways to approach women's hormones, because I was unsatisfied with my reproductive health, and honestly I was kind of pissed! I had tried prescription after prescription but was still dealing with the frustrating symptoms we all know too well: weight-gain, acne, mood swings, painful menstruation, yada yada yada.
In the process of all of this I learned SO MUCH about how everything down there works and I was absolutely shocked that no one, not my GYN or my sex ed classes, had never told me about this stuff. It was simple biology. The more I learned, the more I knew that the BCP was no longer working for me. I needed to get back to myself and in a huge sense who I really am. Not only does the pill prevent you from ovulating and basically puts your uterus on shutdown, it can shift your personality and keep you from attracting the right man for you!
So now, three months later, I, the girl who was mad at her hoo-ha and sometimes just wished it would go away (especially during that time of the month) - am in the beginning of this fantastic apprenticeship with Nicole Jardim, one of the women whose expertise gave me the knowledge and confidence to take charge of my own health. I'm learning even more about hormonal imbalances, nutrition, and how to help women help themselves become their happiest hormone selves! I have become so passionate about this work, because this is information women NEED to know. Information that is backed by research and really just basic biology, but for some reason is getting missed by women all over. We cover up underlying hormonal issues with things like the BCP, which only takes us further out of touch with our bodies. PMS and painful periods are actually not supposed to be normal. We're not actually supposed to become unpredictable crazies a week before our periods. If these symptoms alone could be relieved, let's be honest with each other and think about how much happier we (and those close to us) would be!
And I am not there yet! This decision is not necessarily the easy one but I decided that it is the best one for my mind, body, and future children. I've been struggling with migraines, wacky emotions, sugar cravings, irregularity, stress and fatigue. But unfortunately, this is often how the body deals with being tampered with so severely for so long. It has to relearn and regrow before it can function at its best again. Don't get me wrong, I have seen good things too, wonderful signs that I made the right choice for me. My weight shifted around into all the curvy places it's supposed to be, not packed-on like I need to be ready to haul a baby around at any moment! (I am beautiful and perfect and there was nothing 'wrong' with me, I'm just giving you the real firsthand scoop here and hoping you might have a laugh with me in the process.) My skin and hair are more luminous and healthy. I feel more in my body, femininely energetic, and alive. I'm getting reacquainted with this beautiful ebb and flow which is our womanhood, one of thousands of cycles that exist on the earth to give rhythm and flow to our lives.
I'm talking about a healing that comes by way of a closer connection to our bodies. It is so similar to what I went through with my music injury. Sure, I probably am totally nuts. But I am nuts about these beautiful bodies that we have been given and I believe that they are worth caring for and owning. We may just be weirdly obsessed with ovaries and cervical mucous, but behind that is this desire for you to be the most fully-expressed you, vibrant, happy, healthy in your body which is working with you and not against you. It is my desire that you as a woman increase your awareness of how your body actually works, become more in tune with your body and femininity, and take charge in doing whatever supports YOU in becoming healthier and happier! As my new mentor Nicole says, we are "changing the world, one period at a time". And I am working as hard as I can to become a wise and trustworthy vessel for this work.
